How Often Should Fire Shutters Be Serviced?

If a fire breaks out at your business, it can be hugely detrimental.

As well as potentially destroying your premises, a fire, in the most severe circumstances, can result in loss of life.

With this in mind, it’s essential that you have the appropriate fire safety equipment in place to minimise any damage that may be sustained in a blaze.

Fire shutters are one such product that can help your property withstand a fire but it’s vital that they remain in good working order at all times.

In this article, the team here at SAA Industrial & Garage Door Specialists will outline how often fire shutters need to be serviced, and how our team can assist.

What are fire shutters?

If a fire occurs, it needs to be extinguished as soon as possible to minimise the damage it can do.

While you wait for the fire brigade to arrive, preventing the fire from spreading is extremely important. Fire shutters can help you do exactly that.

Fire shutters are robust barriers that are used to compartmentalise your property and keep the fire in one place. This means that the amount of damage the fire does will hopefully be kept to a minimum.

How often do fire shutters be serviced?

Like with all aspects of commercial fire safety equipment, it’s essential that fire shutters are regularly serviced.

This service will involve an inspection, door testing, making necessary adjustments, lubrication, conducting the required repairs and cleaning the product.

Most business fire safety equipment needs to be serviced on an annual basis, however, fire shutters require more frequent maintenance. This is because it’s essential that these shutters are always in good working condition in order to keep you, your employees and your property safe.

With this in mind, fire shutters need to be serviced on a six-monthly basis. As well as ensuring safety, this service will also make sure you’re complying with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Once a service has been completed, if your door does not need to be replaced you will be presented with a certificate that confirms the work has been completed.

Following a service, you may be provided with a list of repairs or actions you need to take in order to keep your shutters in good working condition. If you ignore these requests, the consequences could be disastrous. Not only are you putting yourself and your employees at risk, but if a fire does occur and you have not heeded warnings from a service, you could face serious legal ramifications.
